An
Act of Betrayal |

Early October
. . . Following Mary's First Meeting with Danielle After She Returns the
Goods "As if," Mary Catherine thought angrily as she heard the other girls begin to snicker. She knew what a BOB was used for . . . she'd even bought one a few weeks ago at the Linden Hills plaid market when she'd been on the ASB joint trip to Hershey Park! She hadn't actually gotten the nerve to try using it yet, but she'd bought a pack of AA batteries and her and Mandy had turned it on and off a few times after lights out. The two of them giggled uncontrollably as they listened to the quiet hum of the sleek shaft and felt the vibrator move in their hands. They'd gotten more use out of the explicit books and magazine that Mary Catherine had bought with the BOB, selling looks to the other girls on the floor. She made a vow to try it for real the next time she was alone. There were some things she wasn't willing to let Mandy know about, best friend or not! Mary had to admit to herself though that some of the other things in Danielle's bag hadn't been so easy to identify. She'd looked through the contents after she returned from her questioning in Miss Saunders office and had been totally confused. Mary and Mandy debated on the way back from the dining hall just why anyone would want edible massage oil and what looked like bras and panties made out of some kind of stretchy rubber! Then too were the handcuffs, blindfolds and a wide variety of items Mary Catherine couldn't even begin to make heads or tails of. She'd sold a lot of merchandise on the Plaid Market back at Saint Anthony's, but never anything like that! As she was about to turn and continue on toward her room, she heard Daphne clearly ask, "What are you gonna do to her Dani? You know you can't trust little rug rats like her any further than you can throw them . . . although she's kind of tiny so you might be able to toss her pretty far!" Daphne laughs, then adds, "I say we give her a good scare to make sure she keeps her mouth shut and her eyes closed. Let's take her out to the lake tonight after lights out, paddle her good, then row her out to the little island, strip her and make swim back to shore as a warning. (A typical scare tactic by the more heavy-handed seniors. At least one or two unfortunate freshmen get that treatment every fall). If she's lucky she'll be able to make it back to her room before the wake-up bell. That should assure she doesn't squeal." Mary's eyes widen and she pales as her jaw drops. "They wouldn't DARE," she thinks beginning to panic. The other girls laugh harder agreeing, but Danielle gives Daphne a hard look and says, "Knock it off Ellis. This squirt isn't like other freshmen. It took brains to snag our goods and hide them while she had a chance, and guts to look that old witch Saunders in the eye and tell her she hadn't seen a thing. She could've gotten me busted me easy and she could've dipped into my inventory and helped herself, but she didn't. If you notice, she also didn't ask me for a favor in return for her helping me out today. Mary Catherine's cool and if I hear that anyone even looks at her funny they'll have to answer to me, got it?" Reluctantly the other girls agree. Danielle knew just how lucky she'd gotten today and that she was indebted to the little squirt. She also knew that things were WAY too hot on campus at the moment and she needed to set up some new rules. "Rule number one," she tells herself as she half listens to the conversation around her, "I never carry merchandise again. I can't afford another close call." She brings her attention back to the present as she hears the bell marking the start of the evening study session. "Meeting tonight?" a tall thin girl with short black hair in a pixie cut named Johanna asks as they start to head out of Benning Hall toward the library. "Yeah," Danielle responds, "regular time and place and the guys are going to come over for a little Saint Francis Scrabble. I have a feeling we're gonna get lucky tonight!" Mary withdraws, as the girls leave the dorm, her anger replaced by a feeling of pride. Danielle thought she was cool! As she heads to her room she wonders just what sort of meeting the older girls are having and precisely what Saint Francis Scrabble is. Perhaps if she played her cards right she'd get an invite from Danielle some time to join in the fun . . .
