Character Sketch
Amanda (Mandy) Bennett
Born—19 March 81
Prep School—Saint Francis, Class of 1999

Mandy is Mary Catherine’s best friend, closest confidante and constant partner in crime. They’ve known each other since the sixth grade when they were assigned as roommates at Saint Anthony’s School for Girls. They were good friends and pretty close in sixth, seventh and eighth grade (close enough to hang out together, get in trouble together and room together all three years) but it wasn’t until they were freshmen at Saint Francis (again rooming together) that they became best friends.

Mandy’s family lives in Boston. Her father (Nigel) is British, in his late-fifties, VERY strict and conservative and a strict disciplinarian (old school UK style) who prefers to discipline Mandy with the tawse or six of the best with a senior cane when she is home from school on breaks. He works as an investment banker. He frequently threatens to send her to Saint Margaret’s School for Girls in Edinburgh Scotland (where her cousins, aunts, grandmother, etc. all attended school) in order to “straighten” her out. He finds Mary Catherine to be a VERY bad influence. Mandy’s mother (Sue Ellen) is MUCH younger (only 37) and is originally from Savannah, Georgia. She’s very much a demure southern belle (old style . . . yes Sir, no Sir to her husband . . . refers to herself as Mrs. Nigel Bennett, etc.) She is a graduate of Saint Francis (class of 80). Sue Ellen married Nigel straight out of high school, an arrangement made by her parents.

Mandy is stunning, in a pre-Raphaelite sort of way. She’s 5'7" with long beautiful curly blonde hair (think heroines in Merchant Ivory films . . . long, thick flowing curls), wide set moss green eyes, flawless skin, perfect teeth, heart-shaped face and a beautiful body, even though she is always complaining about her “sturdy legs”.

She’s very sweet, extremely loyal but fairly dizzy and spends half her time terrified of the Dean (that’s the half of the time when she gets in trouble). She dates a lot; “boy crazy” is the best way to describe her, but she has no steady guy, instead going from one infatuation to the next. She has a constant fondness for junk food, particularly desserts. Her favorite is Mrs. Deavon’s chocolate cake. She’s terrible at keeping secrets so Mary doesn’t always confide in her for her own protection.

Mandy’s a good athlete (Varsity Tennis Team, plays number 1 doubles with Mary Catherine 10th–12th, Varsity Riding Team 11th-12th, and Varsity Field Hockey 9th-12th).

Mandy is also active on campus (class treasurer 9th-12th, president drama club 12th, perennial star in the yearly plays, particularly the musicals . . . she’s a great singer and dancer, she wants to be an actress someday—her dad does NOT approve)! She has worked on the Saint Francis Ledger (newspaper all four years) and was on the yearbook staff her freshman year. She is a SA for Benning Hall (first floor) and her floor paddle is named Woody. Mandy is also a member of the secret society the Thorned Roses (nominated by Mary Catherine at the end of her sophomore year).

She’s a fairly good student, particularly in english, music and art, not too bad at math, but has a lot of trouble with science and is horrible at history (all those dumb dates to remember!).

Mandy has a unique personal style. It’s totally chaotic and thrown together, yet still has a certain charm. It’s often hidden though because she is a walking disaster area 90 percent of the time. You can always count on Mandy’s uniform having at least three violations! Her socks are always falling down, her shoes are scuffed, her shirts are always wrinkled and if there’s something she can bump into that will get her smudged or if she can manage to pour mustard or chocolate sauce or marinara on herself she does.

Her room usually looks like a disaster zone, just one step from being condemned, and when she and Mary Catherine roomed together Mary did most of the cleaning. Fortunately she has a floor full of freshmen this year to keep it neat (a job they all hate). God only knows what she’ll do next year when she goes off to college and has to fend for herself!

Mandy’s current big secret that she’s hoping her parents or Dean Michaels will NEVER discover . . . she got her navel pierced over Christmas (Mary is SO jealous)!
